Democrat Party Remains Undecided to Join or Oppose Jokowi

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Democrat Party Deputy Chief Syarief Hasan stated that his political party has yet to determine whether the party would politically join the government alongside President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo or opt as an opposition.
“Not yet. The party’s position will be determined after our internal upper house meeting,” said Syarief to Tempo on Tuesday, August 13.
Previously reported, Democrat Party’s Head of advocacy and legal assistance, Ferdinand Hutahaean claims that the Dems are set to join Jokowi’s coalition. This decision is said to have been taken since the 40-day commemoration of party chairman Susilo “SBY” Bambang Yudhoyono’s late wife.
However, Syarief asserted that Ferdinand’s statement should be taken as a personal opinion of his and does not represent the political party.
According to Syarief, the Democrat Party has set three requirements if they do indeed join forces with the government, which consists of factors according to elements of compatibility, togetherness, and convenience.
“Those three are the requirements we look for before deciding to join the coalition,” said Syarief.
